Free Ding Jiaxi

Ding Jiaxi is the husband of Sophie Luo, a long-time member of our church who lives and works in the US. Jiaxi remained in China to pursue his peaceful work for increased human rights.

On December 26, 2019, he was taken into custody by the Chinese police while attending a peaceful and legal dinner party. They did not have an arrest warrant. He was held for over a year in an undisclosed location without access to legal representation, and subjected to torture. In January of 2021, he was finally allowed to talk with his lawyer. China Change reported the contents of that meeting in which Jiaxi describes the horror of that year: Prominent Human Rights Activist Ding Jiaxi Tells Lawyer Details of Torture Throughout His Year in Custody

In May of 2021, Ding Jiaxi was allowed another video call with his legal counsel. Jiaxi told his lawyer that detainees are permitted to partake in outdoor activities for less than 30 minutes a day and that their masks are changed only once every three weeks. Due to the low quality of dental hygiene provided by the detention center, the condition of the human rights defender’s teeth is deteriorating. Jiaxi also said his eyesight has deteriorated, and he has still not been given any paper or pen by authorities. The government has set a trial date sometime in 2022 but his lawyer is being given limited access to materials he needs to prepare his defense.

China is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Ding Jiaxi’s arrest and treatment violates the rights afforded to citizens in that document.
